Government of Pacific Island state Niue

Niue is a remote South Pacific island keen to improve its citizens quality of life through the adoption of modern technology and practices.

Niue has a population of 1,625 and has been self-governing in free association with New Zealand since 1974. All Niueans are New Zealand citizens and there are now more than 20,000 Niueans living in New Zealand.

What the customer needed

The Niue government is the main employer on the island and has more than 420 staff members. A number of trading divisions operate under the government including the port, telecom, the power corporation and public works.

Although Niue's economy is dependent on substantial development assistance from New Zealand, the Niue government is committed to increasing the country's economic self-reliance.

The Niue government's key requirement was the implementation of an easy-to-use, reliable and robust intranet and website solution.

Having already performed various ICT tasks for the Niuean government, SAFI Technologies were selected to rebuild the government website and develop an internal intranet based on recommendations and guidelines from both the Niue government and the UNDP.

What we Delivered:

After assessing and gaining an in-depth understanding of their needs, SAFI Technologies devised a comprehensive intranet solution that allowed all government staff to communicate more effectively and share data between departments.

SAFI Technologies have also provided various forms of training for government staff. This included hands-on training of the installation of the systems and web development training. Niue's ICT department was then able to pass these skills onto other government staff as the solution was rolled-out through the organisation.

The e-Government solution has had a major impact on communications throughout the government. Business efficiency has improved, and the government can now provide better services to the people of Niue.

Up-skilling our employees in industry-standard technologies decreases Niue's reliance on external resources and means we can deliver a more responsive service. Having systems that are built by Niueans and can be supported by Niueans should ensure their on-going sustainability, says Scan.

The Benefit to the Customer
